New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning regarding a low-pressure system developing in the southwest Bay of Bengal. Over the last six hours, the low-pressure system has moved in a west-northwest direction at a speed of nine kilometers. The Meteorological Department anticipates the possibility of heavy rains accompanied by thundershowers along the coasts of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu as the low-pressure system gains strength.
The current position of the low-pressure system is 630 km east-southeast of the Chennai coast and 740 km southeast of Nellore, Andhra Pradesh. It is suggested that it will transform into a cyclonic storm by the 5th of this month. Moving in a westward direction, the cyclone, named ‘Miachaung’, is expected to intensify by 3:00 p.m. and reach the Andhra coast. It is likely to reach Nellore and Machilipatnam around 5:00 p.m., with winds expected to reach speeds of 80–90 km per hour.
Anticipating adverse weather conditions, heavy rains are likely in various districts of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh in the coming days. State authorities have directed officials to take precautionary measures, including the evacuation of residents from cyclone-prone areas.
In response to the developing situation, the National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) conducted a review meeting led by Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba. The meeting assessed the preparedness of state governments and central ministries to handle the impending cyclone.
