Chennai: Cyclone Michaung is intensifying into a severe cyclonic storm, currently positioned over the central west coast of Andhra Pradesh near the Bay of Bengal and the north Tamil Nadu coast, approximately 90 km from Chennai. In response to the threat, a red alert message has been issued along the coast of Andhra Pradesh, North Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts that the cyclone may intensify further by December 5. In light of the approaching cyclone, the Tamil Nadu government has taken precautionary measures, declaring a holiday for all schools, colleges, educational institutions, public institutions and corporations, boards, banks, and financial institutions in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts tomorrow.
The Meteorological Department cautions that moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm are likely in Kerala for the next five days.
