CHENNAI: Today, December 7, 2023, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh arrived in Chennai to evaluate the aftermath of heavy rains caused by Cyclone Michaung in Chennai and surrounding districts. He conducted an aerial survey before engaging in discussions with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin.

Residents continue to grapple with stagnant water and power disruptions in parts of Chennai and its suburbs, days after the cyclone struck the south Indian coasts. Despite ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts by civic agencies, the effects persist. In response, another day’s holiday was declared for schools and colleges in Chennai on December 7.

Earlier, Union Home Minister Amit Shah informed through X (formally called twitter), PM Modi had approved the first urban flood mitigation project worth Rs 561.29 crore, titled ‘Integrated Urban Flood Management Activities for Chennai Basin Project,’ under the National Disaster Mitigation Fund (NDMF). The project, which includes Central assistance of Rs. 500 crore, aims to make Chennai flood-resilient.
