Mumbai: The Mumbai Cyber Police has officially initiated a probe into a case involving the creation and dissemination of a deepfake video featuring former Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar. An FIR has been registered against a gaming app responsible for manipulating Tendulkar’s old footage in a false promotional campaign.
The complaint alleges that the fake video, edited to distort Tendulkar’s gestures and voice, was circulated on Facebook. The perpetrators employed deepfake technology to imitate the cricket icon, though the police have not disclosed information about the identity of the gaming app’s owner or the associated Facebook page at this stage of the investigation
Tendulkar addressed the issue on Monday via X, cautioning the public about a deepfake video circulating in which his voice was manipulated to promote a gaming app. The video falsely implied that Tendulkar’s daughter, Sara Tendulkar, regularly used the application. In response, Tendulkar tagged the Maharashtra Cyber Police, the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, and Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrashekar in a tweet, urging swift action against this malicious use of technology.
