New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar told the Rajya Sabha that the government will continue its efforts for Kulbhushan Jadhav’s safety, well being and his early return to India.

The Foreign Minister’s address comes a day after the International Court of Justice asked Pakistan to review their judgment against Jadhav and observed that Pakistan had violated the Vienna Convention in not granting consular access.

Jaishankar said, ” I can assure the government will vigorously continue its efforts to ensure his safety and well being, as well as his early return to India.”

He said that the verdict of the International Court of Justice has vindicated everyone who believe in the rule of law and sanctity of international conventions.

Jaishankar asked Pakistan to release and repatriate Jadhav to India. He also said that the ICJ gave the verdict by a vote of 15-1 with the sole dissent coming from the judge from Pakistan.

He reminded the House of the government’s commitment and untiring efforts in protecting India’s citizen. The Foreign Minister said,” In 2017, the government made a commitment on floor of the House to undertake all steps necessary to protect interest and welfare of Jadhav and we continue to do so.”

The Minister also praised Jadhav’s family for showing exemplary courage in difficult circumstances. He also raised the legal term under the leadership of Harish Salve who represented India to defend the cause of Kulbhushan Jadhav.

Rajya Sabha Chairman, Venkaiah Naidu, said,” I am very happy that the entire House is together in welcoming the ICJ judgment. Hope we will pursue till Shri Kulbhushan is discharged and released.”
