Kolkata: BJP West Bengal state President Sukanta Majumdar stated that the main accused in the Sandeshkhali rape case, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Sheikh Shahjahan, was arrested after continuous protests from the BJP. Sukanta Majumdar mentioned that after around 56 days of BJP’s protests, Sheikh Shahjahan was arrested on February 29th.

Sukanta Majumdar also emphasized that the West Bengal government was compelled to arrest the TMC leader, the primary accused in the rape case, due to BJP’s persistent protests. He stated that BJP’s ongoing protests pressured the Mamata Banerjee government, leaving no option but to arrest Sheikh Shahjahan in the Sandeshkhali case. Sukanta Majumdar added that the people of Sandeshkhali experienced injustice in the incident.

Sukanta Majumdar added that the TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan and his associates have been accused of committing sexual atrocities against women and engaging in land grabbing in Sandeshkhali.

From the beginning of the incident, Mamata government’s attitude did not support the people of Sandeshkhali. The Mamata government was unwilling to acknowledge that such sexual exploitation had occurred in Sandeshkhali.

Furthermore, BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh remarked that the West Bengal police also faced pressure. He noted that the police were under pressure due to the court’s ruling that allowed the accused to be arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) or the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
