Jaipur: Legendary Paralympic athlete Devendra Jhajharia will contest as an NDA candidate from Churu constituency in Rajasthan in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The announcement came after the release of the first phase list of 195 BJP candidates, which included representatives from 15 constituencies in Rajasthan. Churu has been the BJP’s powerhouse since 1999. Devendra Jhajharia, who is a native of Churu, is also likely to win the contest due to this.
At 42 years old, Devendra Jhajharia boasts an impressive track record in Paralympic sports. He made history as the first Indian to clinch two gold medals in a Summer Paralympic Games. His accolades also include a silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics and a gold medal at the 2013 IPC World Championship, both representing Bharat.
In recognition of his outstanding achievements, Devendra Jhajharia was honoured with the Padma Shri award in 2012, becoming the first Paralympic athlete to receive such recognition. Subsequently, he was bestowed with Bharat’s highest sports honor, the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna, in 2017, followed by the prestigious Padma Bhushan in 2022.
