Kolkata: ABVP leaders Shivangi Kharwal and Shalini Varma were unjustly arrested by Kolkata police for protesting against injustice and heinous crimes against women in Sandeshkhali.
Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the largest student organisation in Bharat, staged nationwide protests on March 5, 2024, condemning the atrocities on women, land grabbing, violence, lawlessness, and heinous crimes protected by the ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal. ABVP organized protests in more than 500 locations across the country, including Delhi, Mumbai, various universities, and districts of West Bengal. The protests aimed to condemn the heinous crimes against women, including rape and land grabbing, perpetrated by leaders of the Trinamool Congress under the protection of the state government in West Bengal.
During the protest, ABVP demanded stringent action against the perpetrators and justice for the victims. After the protests, various ABVP units submitted a memorandum to the Honourable President of India, Draupadi Murmu, demanding a high-level investigation by central agencies, legal assistance for the victims, and measures to prevent forced displacement.
A protest was held by ABVP-CUKarnataka against the perpetrators of sexual harassment of underage girls and women of Sandeshkhali, and West Bengal Government’s protecting and shielding of the culprits. ABVP burnt the effigy of CM Mamata Banerjee, who along with her party workers have been at the root of this sexual harrasment, torture, land grab and slavery. ABVP-CUKarnataka demanded toughest & immediate action against the TMC goons and immediate release of ABVP karyakartas jailed for holding a peaceful and democratic protest in Kolkata.
ABVP National General Secretary, Yagywalkya Shukla, stated, “ABVP stands in solidarity with the victims and expresses deep concern over the plight of women who have fallen victim to heinous crimes in Sandeshkhali, the rampant lawlessness, and intimidation by the Trinamool Congress goons in West Bengal. We demand justice for the victims and demand that the government should be held accountable for those responsible for their suffering.”
ABVP National Secretary, Shivangi Kharwal, stated, “We condemn the police brutality against students during the protests in Kolkata. While perpetrators of heinous crimes roam around freely for months after raping women in West Bengal, students like me are arrested and harassed by the police when they raise voices against injustice towards women, demanding strict punishment for all perpetrators of heinous crimes in Sandeshkhali to deter future crimes.”
ABVP National Secretary, Shalini Verma, stated, “No perpetrator should escape accountability, and rigorous action must be taken to prevent any further atrocities against women. We condemn the police brutality against students during the Kolkata protests. The unity of thousands of students nationwide against injustices towards women demands no leniency towards criminals, and ABVP demands the strictest action to deter any atrocities against women in the future.”
