Ministry of Home Affairs launches web portal for Citizenship Amendment Act applications: How to apply?

New Delhi: Following the implementation of rules for the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) by the central government, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) introduced a web portal on Tuesday for individuals to apply for Indian citizenship.

The web portal link (https:/indiancitizenshiponline.nic.in) was unveiled as part of the MHA’s notification of the rules under CAA 2019, now referred to as CAA 2024.

Applicants residing in Bharat are instructed to submit a copy of their online application to the District Collector, while those residing outside Bharat should apply through the Consulate General of India. Upon scrutiny of the application, applicants must appear in person with the original documents for verification. The date and time for verification will be communicated via email or SMS.

This initiative is expected to benefit thousands of refugees in Bharat, as the amendment provides citizenship to minorities from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan who sought shelter in Bharat before December 31, 2014. Under the previous law, migrants were required to reside in Bharat for “not less than 11 years” to qualify for citizenship, a duration reduced to “not less than five years” for eligible persecuted minorities under the CAA.

However, there are allegations of efforts to incite division among people by protesting against the implementation of this amendment.
