New Delhi: ABVP’s decision to field a record number of women in the upcoming Jawaharlal Nehru University Student’s Union (JNUSU) election has brought out the commitment of the student’s organization to give larger representation for women. ABVP said that inclusion of women is part of the student organization’s character, tradition and culture.

ABVP has fielded women candidates in almost every school for the post of councilor. For example, ABVP has announced women candidates for 50% (2 out of 4) seats in School of International studies and 100% (2 out of 2) seats for women in Special Centres.

The ABVP has announced Deepika Sharma, hailing from Bhiwani in Haryana, as its candidate for the post of Vice President.

The nationalist student organization has always encouraged women representation in JNUSU elections. In 2015, ABVP announced Valentina Brahma for the post of Vice President, Nidhi Tripathi for President in 2017, Gita Shree Baruah for Vice President in 2018, Shruti Agnihotri for Vice President in 2019.

With the fact that women make up a majority in the University’s student strength, women representation in the elections becomes furthermore important. ABVP has fielded women candidates in almost every school for the post of councilor. For example, ABVP has announced women candidates for 50% (2 out of 4) seats in School of International studies and 100% (2 out of 2) seats for women in Special Centres.

Students believe strongly that the inclusion of women is necessary for the development of society due to which ABVP has been encouraging women representation and thus announced women candidates for multiple posts in the elections.

JNU Students’ Union is one of the most discussed unions in the country. JNU is witnessing elections this year after four years due to which all the student organizations are campaigning extensively.

ABVP JNU unit’s Secretary Vikas Patel said, “It is very heartwarming to see women participation in the JNU Students’ Union election each year by ABVP. Continuing our tradition, we have announced Deepika Sharma for the post of Vice President in our Central Panel. We have also made sure that women candidatures are in a large number for the post of councilors in various schools underlying the fact that a strong women representation is the backbone for the development of the society.”
