Thrissur: Kalamandalam Sathyabhama’s insulting remarks about RLV Ramakrishnan, brother of Kalabhavan Mani and a Mohiniyattam dancer based in Chalakkudy, have sparked controversy. In an interview with a YouTube channel, the dancer commented on Ramakrishnan’s complexion and performance.

Sathyabhama stated that those who perform Mohiniyattam should possess the qualities of a Mohini (having enchanting or attractive qualities). She observed that upon seeing him (RLV Ramakrishnan), he resembled the color of a crow. Sathyabhama emphasized that Mohiniyattam is characterized by parted feet, and she remarked that it is awkward for a man to perform with crossed legs. In her opinion, men who perform Mohiniyattam should be handsome, as there are handsome men too. She added that even his mother couldn’t tolerate his disgusting appearance. When the incident became controversial, Sathyabhama clarified that she was referring to the organization RLV and not targeting the individual.

Meanwhile, Ramakrishnan condemned Sathyabhama’s remarks on Facebook. Responding to Sathyabhama’s discriminatory attitude Ramakrishnan stressed the challenges faced by artists from scheduled castes in the dance field and called for legal action against individuals holding such prejudiced views.

Satyabhama has made such controversial statements in the past as well.
