Ernakumalam: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned the CPI(M) Thrissur District Secretary in connection with the Karuvannur Cooperative bank scam case. Thrissur CPI(M) District Secretary MM Varghese has been directed by the ED to appear for questioning on April 3, Wednesday. However, Varghese said that he had not received any notice and that he would decide to appear for the ED interrogation only after consulting with the party.
It is reported that the ED has handed over data about the CPI(M)’s fake and benami accounts in the Karuvannur Cooperative bank to the Union Finance Ministry, the Reserve Bank of India, and the Election Commission. The ED intensified actions after Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured Alathur constituency NDA candidate Prof. TN Sarasu that strong action would be taken against corruption in the cooperative sector in Kerala.
The ED reports that the CPI(M) has five fake accounts in the Karuvannur Cooperative bank. It was also found that the accounts were opened in violation of the Kerala Co-operative Societies Act and Bylaws, which mandate membership for opening accounts. Additionally, it is noted that there are 25 accounts in various cooperative banks under 17 area committees in Thrissur. The ED also found that this information is mentioned in the audit reports. The ED found that the accounts were used to deposit party funds, levy collection, proceeds from party land deals, provide benami loans, and deposit commissions and bribe amounts.
