Thiruvananthapuram: With the Lok Sabha elections around the corner, the Congress has yet again suffered a setback in the capital city of Kerala. Congress leader Thankamony Divakaran has joined the BJP. She received the BJP party membership from the Union Minister of State and NDA candidate from Thiruvananthapuram, Rajeev Chandrasekhar. Her party entry was in the presence of district president VV Rajesh and senior BJP leaders.

Thankamony who was a state committee member of the Mahila Congress before joining the BJP, responded that she was leaving Congress due to the party’s reluctance in respecting women. The former General Secretary of Mahila Congress, Thankamony is also the sister of Film Director and CPI(M) supporter Lenin Rajendran.

In 2011, Thankamony had contested in elections as a Congress candidate from Attingal. Thankamony said that she has been an active worker of Congress since the age of 27. But she had to face gross neglect in the party and was not given the respect she deserved. She said that, it was this reluctance of the party towards women that prompted her to join the BJP.

“I want to work more for women. I have a firm belief that BJP will be able to ensure social and economic security for women. It is distressing that SDPI has announced its support to Congress. This needs to change. Rajeev Chandrasekhar is a strong candidate. We should make him win the elections. Development should come in the capital,” Thankamony Divakaran said.

Following Rajeev Chandrasekhar’s entry into the Lok Sabha election as a BJP candidate, many Congress leaders have left the party and joined the BJP.
