Bengaluru: In a major boost for Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, Sumalatha Ambareesh, a former actor-turned-politician and independent MP from Karnataka’s Mandya, has joined the saffron party. Her membership was formally accepted in the presence of senior BJP leaders including BS Yediyurappa, BJP State President BY Vijayendra, leader of the opposition R. Ashoka, Karnataka election in-charge National General Secretary Radha Mohan Das Agarwal, and former Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda.
Sumalatha contested the Mandya constituency in 2019 following the demise of her husband, Ambareesh, a renowned film star and Congress MP. Running as an independent candidate, Sumalatha emerged victorious, defeating Nikhil Kumaraswamy, son of then Chief Minister Kumaraswamy of JD(S), by a margin of 1,25,876 votes, with the support of BJP.
