Thiruvananthapuram: Despite persistent issues with slow internet service through the Kerala Fiber Optic Network (KFON), the state government is adamant about prompt bill payments. . Government offices and schools utilizing K-FON are instructed to settle bills immediately, even as concerns over slow connectivity persist. Also, government offices utilizing alternative internet connections are instructed to inform the government and are directed to replace them with K-FON as the primary internet connection even in instances where there is no interruption or slow speed.
K-FON project, once hailed as a vital initiative, has encountered significant setbacks. As of December, only 18,000 connections have been established out of the intended 30,000 for government offices. Furthermore, of the proposed 14,000 free connections earmarked for below the poverty line households, fewer than 5,000 have been provided.
Efforts have been made to enhance K-FON, with plans to offer internet speeds ranging from 20 Mbps to 250 Mbps. However, the reality remains disappointing, as K-FON has failed to deliver high-speed internet access as promised, despite subscription costs ranging from Rs 1,794 to Rs 7,494 for three months.
