Former Chief Justice S Manikumar declines Human Rights Commission Chairmanship amid controversies

Kochi: Justice S. Manikumar has clarified that he will not be assuming the role of Chairman of the Human Rights Commission, citing personal inconvenience as the reason. This decision comes after the Governor accepted the state government’s recommendation for his appointment, which had been pending for an extended period following dissent from the Leader of the Opposition.

Controversy arose surrounding Manikumar’s retirement from the High Court as Chief Justice. Instead of the customary full-court reference, he received a government-organized send-off reception, which drew heavy criticism. The unusual send-off, attended by the Chief Minister and cabinet members, sparked allegations of unprecedented government interference. This departure from tradition drew significant criticism, with allegations that such an event had never occurred in the state’s history.

The approval of Manikumar’s appointment faced further delays due to the Leader of the Opposition expressing discontent. Despite the Governor eventually endorsing the recommendation after months, Manikumar has opted out of assuming the position against the backdrop of ongoing controversies.
