Thrissur: A historically-first crisis ensued in the Thrissur Pooram Festival last night after the state police put unnecessary restrictions and made interventions in the usual proceedings. The Thiruvambadi Devaswom accused the police for their intervention in the ‘Madathil Varavu’ ritual.

Usually all the roads are open to devotees to enjoy the Thrissur Pooram. However, the police barricaded the roads increasing the difficulty to the devotees. All the roads to Swaraj Round were blocked and prevented devotees from reaching the area. Following this the night procession was stopped.

The police also demanded that committee members must be removed from the area, where the famous firecracker display is conducted. The police ordered the entry of only 175 people to the area. However, Thiruvambadi Devaswom said that people handling the firecrackers and committee members must be allowed. Following the crisis, the Madathil Varavu procession was stopped.

Thiruvambadi Devaswom also put out the lights at the ‘Alankar Pandal’ in protest. However, the lights were switched on only at 5.40 am today.
