Kochi: The Kerala government today submitted a plea at the High Court seeking a reinvestigation and retrial in the Walayar case. A POCSO court had earlier acquitted all the accused in the rape and deaths of two minor Dalit sisters at Walayar in Palakkad.
The government has accepted the failure of the investigation team that probed the deaths of the sisters. The prosecution also came under scanner when the court acquitted all the accused in the case. The accused are said to be members of the communist party and it is alleged that they received help from the investigation team and the prosecution.
Two sisters from the Dalit community aged 13 and 9 were found hanging from their home within a time span of two months in 2017. Postmortem revealed that both the sisters were sexually exploited.
The postmortem report on the body of the elder sister, who was found dead first, revealed that she was sexually assaulted. Yet the investigation team did not probe in that angle. This could have prevented the death of the younger sister, who was found dead after two months in similar way.
Under pressure from the public the government decided to take action against those officials who failed to bring justice to the sisters. On Monday, the government ousted Special Public Prosecutor for inability to present incriminating evidence against the accused. This led to the acquittal of all the three accused in the case.
