Thiruvananthapuram: A report said that only 15% of institutions in higher education are accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The low accreditation rate was revealed by Dr.Rajan Varughese, Member Secretary of Kerala State Higher Education Council.
The report said that during an orientation program on Kerala State Institutional Ranking Framework, Dr. Rajan Varughese disclosed that only 220 institutions out of the 1,500 institutions in higher education are accredited in the state. He added that around 13 lakh students are studying in these institutions.
The report quoted Dr. Rajan Varughese saying that the majority of the students and teachers learn and teach in institutions that have not been assessed for quality. He added that the higher education council is attempting to bring in more institutions into the ranking system.
He also added, the report said, that the state council launched State Assessment and Accreditation Centre (SAAC) with the aim of preparing the institutions to go for NAAC accreditation.
The report also quoted him saying that the enrolment of youth for higher education is better than the national average but Kerala has to go much further qualitatively. He added that even though the state has started new courses and research programs at university level, there isn’t a rush for new enrolment, the report said.
