Thiruvananthapuram: In a press conference, Union Minister V. Muraleedharan called on the media to voice their concerns over the treatment of journalists by the Pinarayi government. He emphasised the importance of media and journalists remaining impartial and not becoming propagandists for the CPM’s fabricated news. Muraleedharan also expressed his dismay at certain media organisations and journalists who have been lauding Vijayan, urging for an end to such practises.
Expressing his astonishment, he noted that upon observing the headlines of various Malayalam newspapers the day after the arrest of a news reporter from a private channel. Muraleedharan drew attention to the fact that the media had disapproved of the honorific title “captain” that had been bestowed upon Vijayan by the newspapers themselves. He also mentioned Pinarayi Vijayan’s response to the journalist’s arrest, where Vijayan distanced himself, claiming ignorance and attributing the situation to biassed bourgeois news organisations.
Muraleedharan welcomed the recent stance taken by the news media and emphasised that this should have been done six years ago, when the Chief Minister had shown hostility towards the media with his “Get Out” remark. The Union Minister also listed several such incidents from the chief minister’s side. He expressed his hope that the trend of praising the Chief Minister would come to an end. Muraleedharan stressed the need for journalists and media outlets to adhere to the ethical standards of journalism and refrain from disseminating false information originating from the CPM office. He warned that failure to question Pinarayi’s authoritative rule would be an injustice to future generations in Kerala.
