Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the Malayalee teacher who created the Miyawaki forest with his own efforts in Mann Ki Baat. Raphi Ramanath, a native of Alappuzha, was praised by the Prime Minister for creating a small forest named ‘Vidhya Vanam’.

The teacher adopted Japanese forestation model ‘miawaki’ for planting trees in his school.

Raphi Ramanath featured in the 102nd edition of the Prime Minister’s monthly radio talk show Mann Ki Baat.

In his talk, PM said that Miyawaki, a Japanese model, is a great way to green a infertile area. Recent times, the miawaki is getting popularity in India also. Several citizens are developing miyawaki forest. A teacher, Raphi Ramanath from Kerala has created a miawaki forest and named as ‘vidya vanam’.

PM pointed out that more than 115 species of plants are cultivated by the teacher. Several people including students from various places are visiting the vidayvanam miawaki forest.

The Prime Minister said that the people of the country, especially in urban regions, should use the said the miawaki method, which is being implemented all over the world.

He highlighted that the miawaki method of forestation achieves its results within a maximum period of 30 years, while the same outcome would require 50 to 200 years using natural foresting methods.

The goals of a miyawaki model include improving biodiversity, sequestering carbon, increasing green cover, lowering air pollution, and preserving the water table. The miyawaki forests act as habitat for a wide variety of birds, flora and fauna.
