The Motor Vehicle Department in Kerala has come under scrutiny for imposing excessive charges on various services, significantly surpassing the rates set by the central government. In addition to accumulating substantial sums through service charges, the department is also charging double the prescribed amount for license renewal and other relevant services.
Notably, the public is experiencing significant hardships due to the implementation of new AI camera penalties, resulting in increased fines and frequent road checks.
According to a notification issued by the central government, a fee of Rs 400 should be levied for license renewal and change of address. However, the Kerala Motor Vehicle Department is collecting a hefty sum of Rs 765 from individuals seeking these services.
The Motor Vehicles Act empowers the central government to establish the fees associated with driving licenses. As per the current regulations, license renewal is set at Rs 200, with an additional Rs 200 for changing the address. Surprisingly, the Kerala Motor Vehicle Department is collecting double the prescribed charges mentioned in the central government’s circular. In the case of an address change, the state department is demanding Rs 505 from the applicants.
