Thiruvananthapuram: Noted writer and political observer, Hameed Chennamangaloor, said that Uniform Civil Code is not a religious issue but that it is a secular issue. He continued that it is about gender equality and gender justice. He added that the reason Congress and CPI(M) is opposing the UCC is because of vote bank politics.
Hameed Chennamangaloor said that the two fronts are against UCC to appease the minorities. The two parties should never have opposed the UCC, he said.
In Kerala, the communist party is trying to convince that they are more apt in looking after the interests of the Muslim community. The CPI(M) also wishes that the Muslim League, now allied with the Congress, will switch sides and come to the left camp.
Chennamangaloor added that Kerala is the last bastion and the last hope of the communist party. Muslims constitute 27% of the total population of the state. If the communist party can gain the support of a huge chunk of Muslim community, then the communist party can have a political stability. This is why they are opposing the UCC, he said.
Hameed Chennamangaloor also said that both the Congress led UDF and the CPI(M) led LDF fronts are afraid of Muslim communal organizations and political parties.
