ERNAKULUM: Sheela Sunny (51), the owner of a beauty parlour in Chalakudy, endured a 72-day imprisonment on false charges. On February 27th, excise officials visited Sheela’s beauty parlour following an alleged tip-off about drugs being concealed there. During the search, the officials discovered 12 Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD) stamps in Sheela’s scooter. Despite vehemently denying any involvement with drugs and asserting that she had never even seen LSD before, Sheela was promptly arrested and imprisoned.
However, subsequent chemical analysis of the seized materials in a laboratory revealed that they were not LSD. Based on this report, Sheela was granted bail by the court and released from jail on May 10th.
Further, she filed a petition, stating that she was unjustly victimized and subjected to harassment by the excise department, public, relatives, and neighbors, which forced her to live in isolation.
Following these developments, discrepancies have emerged in the statement provided by Excise Inspector K Satheesan, who arrested Sheela, and the validity of the Mahassar report. As a result, Satheesan has been suspended, and his mobile phone has been seized for further investigation purposes. It has been alleged that he received an anonymous tip-off, but the veracity of this claim is currently under scrutiny.
Finally, the High Court dropped the FIR against Sheela.
