Rationalist and public speaker C Ravichandran supports UCC; says importance must be given to implementing laws like UCC rather than trying to take women to Sabarimala

Thiruvananthapuram: Rationalist, public speaker and author, C Ravichandran, has come out in support of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). He said that those who are against the UCC are against progressive ideas. It is not correct to oppose the UCC even before its draft has come out. He added that importance must be given to implementing laws like UCC rather than trying to take women to Sabarimala.

We must welcome a ruling party which has come forward to implement a law that was pending for the last 75 years, he said.

Ravichandran said that the people must register their opinions on the issue and discuss the matter rather than opposing it before the draft has come out. The Constitution strongly supports UCC. It is ingrained in every article of the Constitution.

The rationalist said that many people are asking that shouldn’t UCC be opposed because it is being introduced by a communal party BJP. Maybe those people, who are opposing BJP’s move to bring UCC, are afraid if they will be branded in some way by others. There is no political party in India who does not seek votes in the name of religion and caste. Therefore, there is no meaning in keeping BJP at a distance.

C Ravichandran continued by saying that it is not good in opposing BJP’s move to bring UCC. Many are opposing the UCC not because it is being introduced by the BJP. It is because they are reluctant to accept the Constitutional values of equality, gender justice, social justice etc. These are the people who wish that UCC should never be implemented. Those who are raising arguments against the law are those who do not wish the UCC to be implemented.

He said that many argue that UCC must not be implemented in this situation and questioned when it should be implemented. In the discussions during 1947, it was said that the time was not right to implement the Uniform Civil Code. Every time the UCC is discussed, it is said that the time is not right. Saying that it cannot be implemented now is just as same as saying that it must not be implemented.

We must accept whoever implements justice, said Ravichandran. If it is BJP or the Shiv Sena there is no need to look who is implementing justice. Those who were able to bring this law did not bring it      . Then what is the use in opposing it.

The rationalist also asked what benefit a woman gets if she is taken to Sabarimala. Some progressive parties here are intoxicating the people by showing them fake and wrong notions of renaissance. If their aim is the progress of women then they must give importance to things that will give her rights and authority and will help her life her standard of living.

For women, the Uniform Civil Code is inevitable. Only if the UCC is implemented, will every citizen get equal justice and equal rights and equal freedom. Importance must be given to that.

C Ravichandran is a leading voice of rationalists in Kerala and he has a huge following on his social media pages. He is also a public speaker and frequently criticizes religions and religious practices. Though, his criticisms are against every religion, those opposing him accuses that he is more critical against Islam. According to Ravichandran, Islam is more virulent and a threat to humanity.
