NEW DELHI: While attending a conference the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan emphasized the importance of ensuring that religion does not hinder access to justice. He expressed his concern about the current situation where justice is dispensed based on different religions, deeming it a peculiar circumstance.

Governor Arif highlighted the significant positive impact of banning triple talaq, which has led to a remarkable 96 percent decrease in divorce rates among Muslims since its prohibition in 2019. This legal change has brought numerous benefits to Muslim women, empowering them in various ways.

Governor Arif stressed that women’s empowerment should be realized through concrete actions rather than symbolic gestures such as the Vanitha Mathil (Women’s Wall).

He also pointed out that the implementation of religiously-based laws by the British rulers was intended to divide the people, highlighting the need to rectify this historical approach. He questioned the concept of equal justice when a person seeking justice is required to disclose their religious community.

Therefore, Governor Arif emphasized the necessity of a progressive country having equal laws for all, which can only be achieved through the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code.

Failing to establish equality now, he warned, would lead the country towards backwardness.
