THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: E P Jayarajan, the Convener of the Left Democratic Front (LDF), has announced that he will not be attending the CPI (M)’s seminar addressing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).
Jayarajan cited his commitment to the Democratic Youth Federation of India’s (DYFI) ‘Snehaveedu’ program in Thiruvananthapuram as the reason for his absence. Jayarajan’s absence has triggered a fresh controversy now. The announcement of Jayarajan’s absence coincided with the participation of individuals from outside the LDF and religious community organizations in the seminar.
Despite claims that the disputes within the party over the UCC issue have been resolved, Jayarajan’s position remains unchanged. Internal conflicts within the CPI(M) have been brewing ever since the seminar was initially announced. The crisis was initiated by criticisms from the Muslim League, highlighting the CPI(M)’s past stances on the matter. The Muslim League has further expressed its rejection of the CPI(M)’s perceived double standard policy.
CPI(M) national general secretary Sitaram Yechury will inaugurate the seminar against UCC in Kozhikode. The event is scheduled to commence at 4 pm in Calicut Trade Centre near Sarovaram Biopark.
