MALAPPURAM: It is reported that an incident at the Malappuram Edavanna bus stand, five individuals, including the local secretary of CPI (M), were arrested on charges related to a moral issue. However, they were later released on bail.
The arrests followed a complaint filed by a girl who alleged that a gang had misbehaved and intimidated her and her brother while they were waiting at the bus stand last Thursday.
In response to the incident, a flex board promoting moral ethics was erected at the Edavanna bus stand. The board was attributed to ‘Edavanna Janakeeya Kootayma’ and carried the warning, ‘A Warning to Students.’ The warning stated that students found in the area after 5 o’clock would be dealt with by the locals and handed over to their parents. However, the board was met with opposition from students who felt targeted and discriminated against.
In retaliation, the students placed another board beside the flex board. The police intervened and removed both the flex boards to de-escalate the situation.
Meanwhile, a video went viral showing locals allegedly assaulting students in Edavanna. One girl featured in the video spoke up, claiming that she and her brother were subjected to harassment and inappropriate behavior by a group of locals while waiting for the bus. The students further criticized the slow response of the police to their complaint, leading to a growing sense of frustration and concern among the community.
The unfolding events have sparked discussions on the importance of ensuring safety and protection for all individuals, particularly students, and maintaining a harmonious atmosphere at public places.
