Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government will take a decision on Wednesday regarding whether to accord official state honours to the late former Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, at his funeral. Earlier, Chandy’s family had conveyed his wish not to receive any official honours during the funeral proceedings.
In light of this, the Department of Public Administration reached out to the family to ascertain if Oommen Chandy had put his wish in writing. They have been requested to verify the authenticity of his expressed desire. Furthermore, the state government has also sought the opinion of Opposition Leader VD Satheesan on this matter.
As a mark of respect for the departed leader, the government declared a holiday on Tuesday and announced two days of mourning. During these days, the National Flag will fly at half-mast on all government buildings across the state.
Oommen Chandy, the veteran Congress leader, breathed his last on Tuesday at around 4.25 a.m. while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Bengaluru. Following his demise, his mortal remains were displayed for public viewing at the residence of former minister T. John in Bengaluru before being airlifted to Kerala.
