State film awards is politically motivated says Sangh Kalavedi

Thiruvananthapuram: Sangh Kalavedi  Co-ordinator, Kathikan Anjal Gopan, said that the Kerala State Film Awards is politically motivated. The Awards have ignored common artists, new artists and even child artists for a long time. These artists are not given any considerations or any kind of encouragements.

Kathikan Anjal Gopan was speaking at the Sangh Kalavedi district executive meeting held at the BJP office in Thiruvananthapuram. He demanded that the state government must end the negligence of thousands of artists in the state. The Sangh Kalavedi also said that it is important that a strong protest must be raised by the artists.

The recent Kerala State Film Awards came under criticism after it did not award the child artist Devananda for her astonishing performance in the movie Malikappuram. The film depicts the journey of two innocent children, Kallu and Piyush Unni, to Sabarimala guided and protected on their way by a mysterious yet friendly Ayyappa devotee.

The movie was a huge blockbuster for its portrayal of the devotees’ intense longing to visit the abode of Lord Ayyappa. However, Malikappuram came under criticism from the left and Islamist corners for the movie’s storyline. The critics were irritated for showing Hindu beliefs and rituals and tried to defame the movie.

However, the movie was a runaway success and common people including the elderly and children flocked to the theaters in huge numbers, even surprising the makers.

Devananda who portrayed the role of Kallu in the movie was praised widely for her acting skills. She was able to bring out to life the complex emotions of Kallu. Her blind and innocent devotion to Lord Ayyappa and her grief of her personal loss were all well etched by the child artist.

When the film awards were announced, Devananda’s name was not mentioned leading to widespread criticism. Sneha Anu for her role in the movie ‘Thala’ received the best child artist award.

However, Devananda responded to the negligence by the state awards in a matured manner and said that we cannot expect an award when so many others are competing and said that she was not sad for not receiving the award.

In response many people said that she won the hearts of the audience, which is more valuable than the state award.
