Thiruvananthapuram: CPI(M) has finally suspended a party member to save face after the controversy raged over the misappropriation of the martyr’s fund. CPI(M) Thiruvananthapuram Vanchiyur Area Committee member T Ravindran was suspended pending investigation. He is accused of embezzling Rs 5 lakh from the amount collected to be given to the family of martyr Vishnu.
The party collected lakhs of rupees in the name of helping the family of martyr Vishnu, but handed over only 11 lakhs to the family. Although a huge amount was collected, the party does not have the exact figure of the amount. The amount collected in addition to the 11 lakhs was deposited in the account of Kaitamukku Headload Workers Cooperative, under the name of Legal Aid Fund and its president is also Ravindran Nair.
8 lakhs was left in the account. From this, Ravindran Nair is said to have taken Rs 5 lakh. Party members say that he withdrew the money without the party’s knowledge. The allegation was raised against Ravindran Nair on 9th July. Following this, District Committee Chairman Ravindranathan decided to suspend him, pending investigation.
The situation was reminiscent of the case involving SFI activist Abhimanyu. After Abhimanyu’s tragic death, funds were raised in his memory, but where the funds went remains unknown. While a house was constructed and given to his close relatives, there is no recorded account of the precise amount collected and its allocation.
