Thiruvananthapuram: The 52-day ban on trolling in the state is set to end at midnight today, bringing a wave of relief for fishermen as their boats prepare to venture back into the sea. Despite their optimism, concerns loom over the impact of recent weather patterns on the availability of fish.
The ban on trawling had left fishermen anxious, especially with the non-availability of rain and persistent congestion that hindered their fishing efforts even before the ban came into effect. However, with the ban lifted, traditional fishermen hope to make a triumphant return to bountiful waters.
At the state’s largest harbour, Neendakara, Kollam, the fisheries department will unite the chain that has held fishing boats ashore for over seven weeks. Local boats up to 36 feet in length, known for their night excursions, are expected to return by afternoon on the first day, eagerly anticipating a fruitful catch.
Fishermen have their eyes set on the prized prawn species, Asian Seabass, and Marine Shrimp fish, with smaller boats aiming to haul in Pink Perch and sardines. This time, the ban on trawling failed to deliver significant benefits to traditional fishermen, primarily due to the unfavourable weather conditions and persistent congestion.
