New Delhi: On Monday, the Supreme Court responded to the petition filed by the University Grants Commission (UGC) challenging the Kerala High Court’s decision to appoint Priya Varghese as an associate professor at Kannur University.
The High Court had considered the time Priya spent pursuing her PhD as valid teaching experience, leading to her appointment.
Notably, Priya Varghese is the wife of K. K. Ragesh, the private secretary to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
The division bench of Justice J. K. Maheshwari and Justice K. V. Viswanathan heard the special leave petition filed by the UGC. While the UGC requested the Kerala High Court’s order to be put on hold, Priya sought the court’s permission to maintain the current status, as she has already been appointed.
As a result, the Supreme Court issued notice and clarified that the appointment made under the disputed order would be contingent upon the appeal’s outcome. During the hearing, Justice J. K. Maheshwari observed, “To some extent, the High Court is wrong.”
