Motion against UCC unanimously approved by ruling and opposition members in the Legislative Assembly; aims at minority appeasement

Thiruvananthapuram:  Resolution on Uniform Civil Code (UCC) was presented in the Legislative Assembly by the Chief Minister which was approved by the House. Members of the ruling, opposition unanimously supported the motion presented by the Chief Minister. The Chief Minister introduced the resolution under Rule 118.

It was evident that Left and Right parties were aiming at minority appeasement.

The first Chief Minister of Kerala, EMS Namboothiripad, took the stand that there should be one law in the country. But the same party has passed a resolution against it. The left and right parties are joining hands to appease the minority Muslims. It was interesting to note that opposition members also supported the resolution presented by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

The resolution says that the Kerala Legislative Assembly is concerned over the Central Government’s proposition to impose a Uniform Civil Code.

“The Kerala Assembly has expressed concern and dismay at the central government’s move to impose a Uniform Civil Code. This House is of the view that the unilateral and hasty Central move is voiding the secular character of the Constitution.”

Before the resolution was presented in the House, the Chief Minister spoke against the Uniform Civil Code implementation proposed by the Central Government. He said, “The Uniform Civil Code is nothing but the unconstitutional practice by Sangh Parivar. The purpose of the single civil code is to subjugate other religions under Hindu communalism. RSS is eager to establish a Hindu nation. The Sangh Parivar is not debating whether to have a single civil code or not. Their Constituion is Manusmriti.”

He further says, “The Sangh Parivar are those who rejected the Constitution. Likewise, their aim is to re-organize the country. Constitution of Sangh Parivar Manusmriti. The movement against the constitution is always carried out by the Sangh Parivar. A single civil code is only one of their various agendas.”

Although the ruling and opposition leaders contended that the Uniform Civil Code was anti-minority, the opposition did not take a firm stand against the Speaker’s anti-Hindu stance. This shows the anti-Hinduism and minority appeasement of the ruling and opposition members. The Chief Minister who mentioned the religious touch of RSS in UCC has been silent over the anti-Hindu remarks by Speaker AN Shamseer and the widespread protest that followed due to the issue.
