Puthupally bypoll: CPI (M) candidate to be Jaick C Thomas; official announcement tomorrow

Thiruvananthapuram: During a meeting of the CPI (M) state secretariat in Thiruvananthapuram, a decision was reached to nominate Jaick C Thomas as the candidate for the upcoming Puthupally by-election scheduled to take place in the near future. The formal announcement regarding this selection is anticipated to be made tomorrow in Kottayam. The CPI (M) had been facing flak for the delay in finalising their candidate choice.

While Regi Zakaria’s name had also been under consideration, Jaick was ultimately chosen as the candidate due to the backing he received from CPI (M) members. Jaick’s nomination was endorsed by all area committees and subsequently put forth by the district committee to the state leadership. Following deliberations, the state secretariat endorsed the district leadership’s proposal.

Jaick, who had previously contested and lost against the late Oommen Chandy twice, is now making his third attempt in the Puthupally constituency. His initial defeat occurred during the 2016 elections, followed by another loss in the 2021 elections. However, the decision to field Jaick again stems from the CPI (M)’s assessment that Oommen Chandy’s margin of victory has diminished despite his two previous contests.
