Palakkad: Farmers, who had placed their trust in the government’s promise of receiving their rice procurement payments before Onam, are now facing a crisis. The procurement amount has still not reached even the small-scale farmers. Farmers say that there will be tears at this festive time, as it is a bank holiday in the coming days.
The money for the paddy stored months ago is still pending and yet to be received. The fulfilment of many of their needs relies solely on receiving these payments. In Palakkad, there are individuals who are facing a crisis regarding their son’s further medical treatment due to a lack of funds. Chenthamara from Chittoor Chirapada has been compelled to postpone her son’s wedding due to financial constraints. The family is hoping to arrange the marriage in approximately two months’ time.
About 280 crore rupees are owed to farmers solely for paddy procurement in the Palakkad district. Farmers with less than one acre of land under cultivation have received storage amounts. Supplyco is hesitant to provide an exact answer to the question of how much was given.
