Thiruvananthapuram: As the deadline for the distribution of Onam kits looms closer, more than half of the eligible population in the state has yet to receive their kits, leaving around three and a half lakh individuals in uncertainty. The government, however, remains steadfast in its assertion that the distribution will be successfully completed by the end of the day.
According to the latest figures available as of last night, a total of 259,944 individuals have managed to receive their Onam kits. Despite this, a substantial 327,737 ration card holders are still awaiting the arrival of their kits. The government has assured the public that the necessary supplies have been dispatched to all authorised ration shops and assures the completion of the distribution process within the stipulated timeframe.
As part of the efforts to expedite the distribution, ration shops across the state have extended their operating hours, now opening their doors from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. without any breaks. This move aims to accommodate a larger number of people and ensure that the distribution process remains unhindered.
Adding to the complexities of the situation was the unexpected breakdown of the electronic point of sale (e-POS) machines, adding a further obstacle to the swift distribution of Onam kits. To circumvent this challenge, distribution was temporarily shifted to an OTP (one-time password) verification process. While authorities managed to resolve the technical glitch by 10:30 a.m., the subsequent distribution process faced some slowdown due to the earlier setback.
