Thiruvananthapuram: Once again, Uthradam dawns, marking another step in the festival of abundance and joy in the hearts of the Malayali community. This day announces the commencement of the concluding phase of arrangements, as Malayalees ready themselves to embrace the forthcoming Thiruvonam Day. The upcoming night will hum with activity as preparations unfold for the grand festivities on Thiruvonam. Uthradam holds a distinct place, adorned with enduring memories of agricultural heritage. It’s during Uthram that the marketplace bustles with its utmost vigor, gearing up for the ten-day extravaganza known as Onam, spanning from Atham day to Thiruvonam.
Regardless of the extent of preparations undertaken, the fervor of the Malayalees on Uthradam Day knows no bounds. This day propels Malayalees into a whirlwind of purchasing, destined to craft the Athapookalam (floral arrangement) and prepare the grand feast. Festive proceedings across the entire state are set to kick off from today. Throughout Kerala and among Malayalees scattered worldwide, this day will be one of bustling activity.
The ‘Athapookalam’ created on the morning of Uthradam holds its own uniqueness. This day inaugurates the commencement of the grandest floral designs. Similar to Thiruvonam, Uthradham bears significant importance. It is intricately tied to our cultural heritage. Uthradam is also the day when, in times gone by, farmers presented their agricultural yields to the divine.
The Uthradam Lamp (‘Uthrada Vilakku’) holds immense importance during Uthradam. A plantain tree (banana tree), cut at about four feet in height, is made into a lamp and positioned on the ground. This lamp is then lighted, using saffron oil as fuel. The Uthrada Vilakku is crafted as a gesture of welcome to Mahabali, who returns to meet his people. This tradition was observed with utmost dedication and sincerity by previous generations. The celebratory programs and preparations for Thiruvonam Day adds more color to the Uthradam Day celebrations.
