PATHANAMTHITTA: The ‘Jalolsawam’ water festival, taking place at Aranmula Nettayat on the Pampa river, kicked off at 12:45 pm. The Aranmula Uthrittathi Vallamkali, also known as the Aranmula Boat Race, stands as one of Kerala’s most ancient and revered boat racing traditions.
The festival’s inauguration will be carried out by Minister Saji Cherian, followed by Health Minister Veena George, who will flag off the water procession. Adv K Anantha Gopan, President of the Devaswom Board, will then officially inaugurate the competitive boat race.
The festivities commenced earlier in the day at 9:30 am when Collector Divya S Iyer lit the ceremonial lamp, brought in a procession from Aranmula temple, and hoisted the flag.
As per information provided by the Palliyoda Seva Sangam (PSS), this year sees the participation of 51 Palliyodams (large boats) in the water processions, with 48 Palliyodams competing in the races.
Pramod Narayan MLA will present the ‘Ramapurathu Warrier Award’ to film director Abhilash Pillai of Malikappuram, an honor bestowed by the Palliyoda Seva Sangam. Kummanam Rajasekharan will deliver the keynote address.
In light of the Aranmula Uthrittathi Vallamkali, the district Collector has declared a holiday for all government offices and educational institutions in the district on Saturday. However, there are no changes regarding public examinations.
