Heavy rains trigger yellow alert in Kerala, cyclone formation expected

Thiruvananthapuram: The southern Indian state of Kerala is currently experiencing heavy rainfall, prompting authorities to issue a yellow alert in seven districts from Thiruvananthapuram to Idukki. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has cautioned that these rains are expected to persist until Monday.

The yellow alert has been sounded in the districts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Idukki today. Additionally, there is a likelihood of widespread rain across the state in the coming days. An orange alert has been issued for Alappuzha for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, while Idukki is on an orange alert for Wednesday. Pathanamthitta is still receiving heavy rainfall.

The current spell of heavy rains is attributed to the formation of a cyclone over the North Bay of Bengal, which is expected to gain strength due to low pressure. Preliminary indications suggest that the initially intensified rains in central and south Kerala may extend to north Kerala, depending on the path of the low-pressure system. Some areas could experience heavy downpours.
