THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Assistant Director General of Police (ADGP) MR Ajith Kumar, responsible for Law and Order, has issued a circular warning against the use of drugs within the Kerala police force. The circular outlines severe actions that will be taken against police officers found using alcohol or other intoxicating substances while on duty.

The new circular specifies that severe measures will be implemented to deter police officers from consuming alcohol or other intoxicants during their official responsibilities. The circular places the responsibility on superior officers to supervise their subordinates while on duty.

According to the circular, that Station House Officers (SHOs), who are responsible for their respective police stations, will face consequences if their subordinates report for duty under the influence of alcohol. Likewise, Deputy Superintendents of Police (DySPs) will also face disciplinary actions if their immediate subordinates are found to be on duty while under the influence of alcohol.

Furthermore, the circular emphasizes the responsibility of Superintendents of Police (SPs) to ensure that their subordinate police officers remain free from the influence of alcohol or any other intoxicating substances while on duties.

ADGP Ajith Kumar stresses that superiors should not only monitor and control their subordinates but also serve as role models for them. The circular highlights the importance of punishing those who use intoxicants, as it has been observed that police officers under the influence fail to perform their duties and sometimes exhibit rude behavior towards the public, leading to conflicts in various instances.

Such behavior damages the reputation of both the Kerala government and the police force among the public. The circular further instructs all unit heads to identify officers engaging in misconduct, and it places the responsibility of guiding these officers back on the right track squarely on their superiors. Failure to report such incidents by superiors is deemed a serious lapse in supervision.

In light of these directives, severe departmental actions will be taken against unit heads and supervising officers who neglect their duty, as emphasized by ADGP Ajith Kumar in the circular.

The circular concludes by stating that District Police Chiefs should organize special meetings to ensure that all officers fully comprehend the information and directives outlined within the circular.
