THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a bid to extend the reach of the Vande Bharat Express, senior BJP leader and former Union Minister, Pon. Radhakrishnan, has approached the Railway Minister. This request comes on the heels of the significant recognition received by the Vande Bharat Express.

Last Sunday, on September 24, Prime Minister Modi inaugurated nine new Vande Bharat Express trains, connecting 11 states, including Kerala. Among these, one Vande Bharat train service operates between Chennai and Tirunelveli, while another operates between Kasaragod and Thiruvananthapuram. However, the Vande Bharat trains have not yet covered parts of the Kanniyakumari district, leaving passengers in the region in a state of desperation.

In response to the concerns of the people in the Kanniyakumari district, they have requested the introduction of the Vande Bharat service. But according to the sources that Congress leader Vijay Vasanth, the sitting MP of the Kanniyakumari constituency, has not been responsive to these requests. There have also been allegations that the MP’s business interests make it difficult for constituents to meet with him in the constituency.

In light of these circumstances, the former Union Minister and senior BJP leader Pon. Radhakrishnan has taken action on this matter. In a letter addressed to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Radhakrishnan requested the extension of the newly started Vande Bharat service between Chennai and Tirunelveli to Kanniyakumari.

In his letter, the leader emphasized the tourism potential of the district, highlighting that a significant number of domestic and international tourists visit the holy site of ‘Triveni Sangamam’ in Kanniyakumari. Later, while talking to media he mentioned that extending the train service would not only boost tourism but also improve local livelihood opportunities.
