Kochi: In yet another incident of gold smuggling, authorities at Nedumbassery airport thwarted an attempt by a smuggler to sneak in gold by transforming it into a paste and concealing it in his underwear. The accused, identified as Zakir, who arrived from Sharjah, was apprehended by customs officials during a routine inspection.
Customs officers discovered that Zakir had ingeniously hidden more than 500 grams of gold by converting it into a paste and attempting to conceal it in his undergarments.
This incident comes on the heels of another recent gold smuggling case at Kannur International Airport, where customs officials apprehended two individuals with gold worth half a crore. Rishad, a resident of Thamarassery who had arrived on an Air India Express flight from Bahrain, was found in possession of 720 grams of gold with an estimated value of Rs 42 lakh.
The modus operandi employed in this case was particularly audacious; the gold was shaped into pills and hidden in the suspect’s anus. The customs inspection revealed the concealed gold during the investigation, leading to the immediate apprehension of the individual. Subsequently, the suspect was questioned by customs authorities and subsequently handed over to the police for further legal action.
