THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Prominent cartoonist S. Sukumaran Potti (91) passed away. He was popularly known as Sukumar. The cartoonist succumbed to age-related ailments in Kochi.
As the founder of the Kerala Cartoon Academy, he also authored 50 books, encompassing poetry, stories, and novels. Sukumaran initiated his journey into cartoon drawing during his school years, with his first cartoon being published in the ‘Vikadan’ magazine.
Following his retirement from the police force, he dedicated himself full-time to writing and drawing. His accomplishments also include receiving numerous accolades, including the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award.
Sukumaran Potti was born in 1932 to Subbarayan Potti and Krishnammal in Attingal, Thiruvananthapuram. Sukumar frequently accompanied his father, a priest at the Thampanoor Subrahmanya Temple, in preparing his favorite idols for darshan. He also had a penchant for sketching caricatures of the idols on both walls and paper.
During his student years, Sukumar used charcoal to create artwork on the walls of his house.
