New Delhi: Former Lakshadweep MP Muhammad Faizal approached the Supreme Court against the High Court verdict finding Faizal guilty in an attempted murder case. The High Court did not stay the verdict of the Kavaratti Sessions Court, confirming the involvement of Faizal in the case. Referring to this, the Lok Sabha Secretariat disqualified Faizal again. Following this, Faizal approached the Supreme Court with a petition.
The petition will be considered on the ninth of this month. Senior lawyer Kapil Sibal will appear for Faisal in the Supreme Court. Faizal was disqualified first after the verdict of Kavaratti Sessions Court.
The Lok Sabha Secretariat issued a notification on Faizal’s disqualification the other day, citing the High Court verdict. But Faisal approached the Supreme Court and got a stay on the disqualification. The Supreme Court stopped the disqualification citing that the case is under consideration of the High Court. The Kavaratti Sessions Court had found Muhammad Faizal guilty in the 2009 attempt to murder case.
Mohammed Faizal, along with three others, was convicted and received prison sentences ranging from one month to ten years, from the Kavaratti Sessions Court. These sentences were imposed under different sections of the Indian Penal Code in connection with their attempted murder of Mohammed Salih, who was the son-in-law of the former Union Minister P M Sayeed during the 2009 Lok Sabha elections.
The High Court had stayed the verdict on January 25, but after the intervention of the Supreme Court, the petition was heard again. Though Faizal was disqualified in January, he was reinstated as an MP on March 29.
