Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala High Court has initiated proceedings to address a petition urging the regulation of negative reviews by online vloggers on the day of a film’s release. The move comes following a petition filed by Mubeen Rauf, director of the film ‘Aromalinte Adyathe Pranayam,’.
As per media reports, Justice Devan Ramachandran, presiding over the case, has requested explanations from both the central and state governments in connection with the petition. Additionally, the court has designated Advocate Shyam Padman as amicus curiae , assists the court, to offer expert assistance.
According to the complainant, Mubeen Rauf, some vloggers are purportedly posting negative reviews without watching the film. Furthermore, Rauf alleges that certain vloggers are resorting to threats of publishing negative reviews unless they are compensated by the film’s producers. Advocate CR Rakesh Sharma is representing the complainant in this legal matter.
Emphasising the collaborative effort involved in filmmaking, Rauf argues that writing negative reviews within minutes of a film’s release on social media is unjust and calls for restrictions.
Rauf contends that it has become commonplace for negative reviews to be posted without watching the film, and, disturbingly, producers and crews are allegedly extorted for money to prevent the negative publication of critiques before the film’s release. In light of these concerns, Rauf has appealed to the High Court to establish guidelines and restrictions for film reviews on social media.
