Kochi: The High Court has mandated that film reviews should only be published seven days after the release of new movies, emphasising the potential far-reaching consequences of early negative online criticism. The court order comes following the petition filed by Mubeen Ruaf, director of ‘Aromalinte Adyathe Pranayam’.
The court has not only called for a delay in reviews but has also ordered an investigation into the defamation of films, recognising them as intellectual property that involves the collective efforts, dedication, and aspirations of numerous individuals.
The petitioners, citing concerns over the detrimental effects of immediate negative reviews on audience perception, argued that such critiques on the day of the film’s release could discourage people from watching it. The petitioner further highlighted the troubling trend of online bloggers demanding money in exchange for positive reviews, creating an environment of exploitation within the film industry.
The High Court acknowledged the petitioner’s argument that negative reviews without adequate preparation can significantly impact a film’s reception, potentially jeopardising the hard work and investment of those involved in its creation.
