Thiruvananthapuram: Women judicial officers in Kerala have been granted the liberty to wear dress beyond the traditional saree. This decision comes after the Administrative Committee, led by Chief Justice AJ Desai, deliberated on the matter and is set to release an official order in this regard shortly.
The initiative was set in motion when female judicial officers expressed their desire for a more flexible dress code. A formal request was submitted to the registrar, prompting the establishment of a committee of judges to examine the possibility of such a change. The committee’s findings were subsequently endorsed by the Administrative Committee and later by the Full Court.
The forthcoming order signifies a departure from the longstanding practice of wearing sarees, offering women judicial officers the choice to opt for other clothing options. The rationale behind the request was to enhance the comfort of individuals in their professional roles.
Approximately 48 percent of judicial officers in the state are women. Out of the total 474 judges, 229 are women.
The Chief Justice praised the move as an excellent step for the country. He said the lower courts in Kerala are doing a great job of providing justice. They talk directly to judicial officers in all districts to understand problems and make the justice process faster.
