Kozhikode: Social activist VP Zuhara filed a police complaint against Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama Joint Secretary Mukkam Umar Faizi’s anti-women remarks. The complaint was filed with the Kozhikode City Police Commissioner. VP Zuhara protested by removing her hijab at the ‘Thirike Schoolil’ (Back to School) program organized by Kudumbashree at Nallalam School, the other day.
VP Zuhara, Founder and President of NISA, a forum which works for the upliftment of Muslim women, had come as the chief guest of the ‘Back to School’ program. During her speech, she removed her hijab to express her protest against the ant-women remarks of Samasta leader Umar Faizi. Zuhara claimed that Samastha leader Faizi, in a channel discussion had said that women who do not cover their heads were of questionable character.
Zuhara said that, to cover or not cover the head was a woman’s choice. “I grew up wearing hijab. But now I feel this is not needed,” she said before removing her hijab. She said she will take legal action against Faizi’s ant-women remarks and will complain to the Women’s Commission and the Human Rights Commission.
It is reported that, enraged by Zuhara’s action Shahul Hameed, the PTA president of the school where the event was being held, allegedly hurled abuse at her. Zuhara is reported to have filed a complaint with the Nallalam police in this regard.
The hijab controversy began when CPI(M) leader K. Anil Kumar said that the party had a role in making girls in Malappuram district confident enough to abandon the hijab. But the party dismissed the statement. Umar Faizi is said to have commented on it saying that women who did not wear hijab were of questionable character.
