WAYANAD: In response to the need for aerial surveillance in the Maoist-affected area of Kambamala, a helicopter landed in Wayanad. The police have intensified anti-Maoist operations in Wayanad district, a forest tri-junction bordering Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka, following recurring attacks at Kambamala.

It has been reported that a few days ago, a gang of five Maoists entered the tea estate of the Kerala Forest Development Corporation (KFDC). The gang also destroyed a surveillance camera installed by the police. Maoists have created an atmosphere of panic in the Kambamala region. Local residents have stated that they live in constant fear every night, worried that the terrorists may attack them at any time.

In this situation after recognizing the need for aerial surveillance, the police collaborated with other departments as well.

Combing operations, along with helicopter surveillance, have been arranged in the area to monitor the attackers, said Mr. District Police Chief Padam Singh. He added that search operations with the assistance of Thunderbolt, the commando group of the State Police force, and their counterparts in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, would also be intensified.

It is reported that the helicopter, which departed from Chalakudy, arrived in Wayanad around 2.45 pm on Monday. It landed on the ground of Government Engineering College in Thalappuzha, Wayanad around 3 pm. The special operation group DIG P Vimaladitya, Kannur range DIG Thomson Jose, special operation group SP CS Shahul Hameed, among others, were in the helicopter.

Immediately after landing, senior police officers convened a special meeting at the conference hall of the college. The decisions made in the meeting were not disclosed to the media. Although the officers had initially planned to go to Kannur following the meeting, they decided against it due to heavy rains and bad weather.

They returned to Areekode around 5.50 pm and are likely to continue surveillance in the coming days.
